Work and Time Study (WTS)
In WTS, people are at the centre of the analysis. To systematically investigate and optimize work methods and processes, the course covers methods from the fields of time management and ergonomics.
Objectives and Content
The aim of WTS is to teach the fundamentals of ergonomics and time management in the context of industrial processes.
In the field of time management, the course covers important basic concepts as well as key methods for determining time requirements. These include, for example, REFA time studies, predetermined motion time systems such as MTM, standard time data, as well as comparison and estimation methods.
Another focus is the ergonomic assessment and design of work systems. In addition to fundamental concepts, practice-oriented tools for assessing physical workload at the workplace are introduced, such as the Key Indicator Method and EAWS. Digital support tools are also presented.
Core topics
- People at the Centre of Work Systems
- Methods for Time Determination
- MTM-UAS

- Comparison and Estimation
- Standard Time Data
- Ergonomics
- Assessment of Physical Workload
- Key Indicator Method
- EAWS
Relevance and Motivation
Today, time management is one of the most important means by which companies can efficiently plan and organize their production processes. While in the past it also played a major role in employee remuneration, the focus today is increasingly on the analysis and optimization of production. For example, predetermined motion time systems can be used during factory planning to establish reliable time standards for work processes. Workplace ergonomics is becoming increasingly important as the population ages. As the retirement age rises, it is becoming increasingly important to keep employees’ physical workload as low and appropriate as possible. Tools for assessing physical workload in the workplace provide an essential basis for improving workplace ergonomics.
