DAAD Summer School on IoT and ML in beverage production a great success

With René Wöstmann, Nikolai West and Marius Syberg, three experts from the IPS traveled to Sydney together with Josef Kimberger, an expert from the Bitburger Brewery Group, to conduct a DAAD Summer School on the topic of "Internet of Things & Machine Learning in the Beverage Industry". In Australia, topics in the field of digitalization and the brewing process itself were trained and the application of Data Science in an industrial environment was taught live on a brewing asset.

In October, an international Summer School on the application of IoT and ML technologies to the analysis and optimization of a brewing concept was held for the first time as an example of a use case in the process industry. In the program, which was funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), students from the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) had the opportunity to learn first-hand about technologies and expertise in the topics of the future. Based on basic introductions to Industry 4.0, the Internet of Things (IoT), database technologies, the brewing industry, and machine learning (ML), a hackathon was held to create dashboards for condition monitoring and optimize a brewing recipe using ML methods. At the end of the week, the recipe was brewed with experts from IPS and Bitburger. The program was rounded off by a field trip to Bürkert Fluid Control Systems, a leading global manufacturer of measurement, control and regulation systems for liquids and gases, and to the Young Henrys brewery. At the same time, experiences of studying and working at German universities were passed on. A follow-up event is already being planned, which will address further targets of CO2-neutral brewing using bioreactors and algae cultivation.
