Data science problem solving

Problem

As digitalization progresses, traditional courses that focus on lectures and exercises are no longer sufficient to adequately prepare students for the demands of the modern working world. In order to gain a deep understanding of data science problems, students should deal with the problems, gain experience and experience the solution process using exciting demonstrators. Modern teaching requires innovative teaching formats so that students have the opportunity to gain these valuable and formative experiences.

Objective

The aim is to develop a practice-oriented course in which students learn the interaction of software and hardware in the context of data science problems in interdisciplinary teams. Using exciting demonstrators of a brewing plant and an algae reactor (as a CO2 sink) at TU Dortmund University, students will combine theoretical and practical knowledge and equip them with intelligent Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) sensors in order to retrofit, digitize and analyze the systems. The groups rely on documentation from the previous group and learn documentation and knowledge management in order to make the experience available to the next group. The aim of the follow-up group is to adapt the demonstrators for a new task. Students are enabled to prepare for the challenges of the future with accelerated technological progress and changing requirements.

Approach

The project is divided into three phases. In the conception phase, the teaching concept is planned and equipment and extensions to the facilities for students are procured. In the second phase, the concept is validated and improved with research assistants and the brown network. In the third phase, the course is held twice with students and feedback is obtained. During the phases, recommendations from students on sensors and system extensions are procured and prepared.
