The "automatica 2022" took place from 21 June to 24 June 2022. The trade fair is considered the leading trade fair for intelligent automation and robotics. One of this year's trend topics at "automatica" was the digital transformation in manufacturing. This topic was taken up by the Institute for Production Systems (IPS) and brought closer to the visitors with the AKKORD project through the Carrera demonstrator.

Objective of the AKKORD research project

In recent years, interest in Industrial Data Science (IDS) has increased, but IDS projects in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) often fail at the initiation stage. Reasons are a lack of resources (people, time, money, etc.) and competences. Accordingly, the objective of the research project is to make IDS accessible to SMEs as low-threshold as possible.
AKKORD's approach is to offer Data Science in a modular and reusable way on a platform that was designed and developed by 13 other partners in addition to the IPS. By sharing existing analyses via the platform, SMEs can benefit from the network effect and consequently fewer resources are needed to carry out the projects. To enable SMEs to use the AKKORD platform, the platform also offers a skills development section. Together, this creates a work & learn platform for the implementation of IDS projects.

Modular data analysis through the data analysis process chain

At the automatica 2022, the Carrera demonstrator presented an abstract use case. The demonstrator illustrates how the AKKORD Work & Learn platform is applied. Via a modular data access, time stamps and vehicle information are further processed with the help of the modules specially developed in AKKORD to determine the race winner, the fastest lap and other race information. With the help of numerous interested trade fair visitors, it was possible to discuss how the approach developed in AKKORD can be adapted to different industry scenarios.

Competence and collaboration through the AKKORD Work & Learn platform

To enable SME employees to use the AKKORD Work & Learn platform, the IPS also presented the collaboration and learning part of the platform, which was developed under the leadership of the BtF and NeoCosmo. Recurring roles in IDS projects make it possible to develop targeted role-specific learning paths for users. Learning modules within the learning paths prepare the user for the use of the platform and also enable the user to further educate him/herself in his/her field of activity. For example, basic modules on data mining and data visualisation are suggested for user analysts.

Summary and outlook

Overall, the IPS was able to successfully present the idea of the AKKORD platform at the automatica 2022 in Munich. Many interested visitors informed themselves about the project at the IPS stand. With the help of AKKORD, the IPS makes industrial data analysis tangible for everyone.

Many thanks to the Scientific Society for Assembly, Handling and Industrial Robotics - MHI e.V., which provided the IPS with the stand and took over the organisation for its members.
